  7. National Assembly President Laurent Fabius. But the French
  8. public seemed more than a little blase: only about 30 people
  9. showed up last week for a political colloquium on the theme of
  10. progress. Toward the end of the second day, however, the room
  11. was unaccountably filled with spectators, and the applauding
  12. throng seemed to have saved the ruling Socialists from a public
  13. relations disaster. But relief turned to embarrassment when it
  14. was learned that more than 100 members of the crowd had been
  15. paid $63 each to attend the event for three hours.

  17.     Tourism Minister Olivier Stirn, who sponsored the symposium,
  18. blamed overzealous Socialist Party members for the blunder.
  19. Commented a headline in the daily Liberation: RIDICULE CAN BE
  20. FATAL. The words proved prophetic. Later that day the Prime
  21. Minister's office announced Stirn's resignation.
